Focus and Energy

I have a quote on my fridge. {They always say put inspiring things where you’ll see them everyday…and let’s face it…the fridge…it’s a no brainer}. The quote says:

This is a reminder I need daily. Why?

Because on a daily basis I struggle to put my energy towards the things that really matter. Because regardless of if I am aware of it or not, I am responsible for designing my daily life. Every moment, I get to choose what I focus on. I need to be reminded of that.

Do I focus on: happiness? sadness? decisiveness? ambivalence? success? failure? courage? fear? The list goes on. You get the point.

Fun fact: Research shows that paying attention to and focusing on positive feelings literally expands your world. Focusing on the negative makes it tiny. {Research people, it’s a fact, no longer can you live in denial!}

I don’t know about you, but I would love to live in an expanded world.

So, let’s talk about 2 EASY ways you and I can take action and focus our energy to a more expanded and positive world:

  1. Think of Your Focus Like A Muscle. Muscles get tired the more you use them right? For example: do 3 sets of 15 repetitions of bicep curls, and your biceps will be tired! Focus works the same way. If you spend your energy focusing on things that make you unhappy or drain you, you will not have the energy to focus on the things that bring you joy and happiness. Your focus will be “tired.” So use that focus wisely!

ACTION STEP ONE: BE AWARE OF WHAT YOU ARE FOCUSING ON! Seriously, keep a running note in your iPhone or in a notepad, or a scrap of paper etc. on an hourly basis…what are you focusing on?? Every hour, write it down! Becoming aware of where your focus is going is eye opening

2. Be Inspired Daily. Zig Ziglar has a great quote that I have posted in my bathroom (yes, I have quotes posted EVERYWHERE in my house. Thanks for asking)

Such great advice! What do you do to stay motivated and inspired daily? Need some ideas? Well, what works for me is meditating (even just 3 minutes of focused breathing while listening to a meditation track helps), reading, going for a walk, listening to a podcast etc.

ACTION STEP TWO: Spend a minimum of 10 minutes a day motivating yourself and getting inspired. Schedule this! As a mother of 3, with a 4th on the way, and the daily running of a Charter Public School….if I don’t schedule my motivation and inspiration time (and ignore the feelings of selfishness that pop up when I do this….) then it won’t happen.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Become aware of when you are most effective during your day (are you a morning person? an evening person? a late night person? a random afternoon person?) and take THAT TIME to seek out your daily motivation and inspiration. Why spend those effective minutes and hours doing laundry/dishes/paying bills/looking at social media when you could be using it to make YOUR LIFE better???

Just do it. Trust me.

I truly hope you will take the time today, right now, and commit to focusing your thoughts and energy on the things that make YOU happy, the things that will make YOU a better YOU.
